Staying in Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is an island nation in the eastern Caribbean, part of the Windward Islands. Its capital is Castries, covering 617 km² with a population of approximately 184,100. Historically contested between Britain and France, it gained independence in 1979 as a Commonwealth realm. Known for its dramatic Pitons and rich cultural blend, it offers a mix of luxury resorts and business travel opportunities.

Entry & getting around

Accommodation Model & Regional Structure

Accommodation is dominated by all-inclusive resorts, primarily in the north near Castries (business-friendly) and the south near Soufrière (scenic/leisure). City-based hotels are limited; travel is typically centered around specific resort zones.

Gateways & Transport

The primary gateway is Hewanorra International Airport (SLU) in the south, though George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) serves smaller regional flights. Domestic transport relies on taxis and rental cars due to mountainous terrain; there are no domestic flights.

Entry & Visa Requirements

Visa requirements vary by nationality, with many eligible for visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry. Travelers should verify current regulations with the nearest Saint Lucian consulate before departure.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

Major international chains such as Hilton, Marriott, and IHG have a strong presence, focusing on luxury resorts. Independent boutique hotels may not participate in global loyalty programs, though some join regional alliances.

Trip preparation

Health

Use normal Caribbean trip precautions: eat freshly prepared food, wash hands, and use treated/bottled water if local supply is interrupted or if hiking. CDC flags mosquito-borne dengue, Zika and chikungunya risk, so use repellent and screened/AC rooms. Heat, sun and dehydration matter; hike the Pitons early, carry water, and avoid fresh, unchlorinated lakes/rivers because schistosomiasis is reported. No high-altitude illness issue for typical itineraries.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 1 month before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, Tdap, polio, flu, varicella/shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A is recommended for unvaccinated travelers; hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers of all ages; typhoid for most travelers, especially rural/smaller-city or local-home stays. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is only a discussion for higher animal-exposure trips or limited access to care. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Saint Lucia itself and is not required from the U.S.; proof is required for travelers aged 9 months+ arriving from yellow-fever-risk countries.

eSIM / connectivity

Connectivity is generally good in visitor corridors, but do not assume local eSIM activation is universal. The main mobile networks are Flow and Digicel; visitors commonly use roaming, international travel eSIMs that list Saint Lucia, or buy a local prepaid physical SIM/data plan after arrival. Check handset band support and carrier eSIM availability before departure, especially if you need data immediately at UVF/SLU airport.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-07-05).
