Staying in Spain

Spain is a hotel-friendly country for trips that mix city culture, coast, islands and food-focused regional travel. Madrid and Barcelona work as the main urban bases; Seville, Granada, Malaga and Cordoba anchor Andalusia; Valencia and Alicante suit the Mediterranean coast; Bilbao and San Sebastian cover the Basque Country; Santiago de Compostela and Galicia fit northern itineraries; Palma, Ibiza, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are island bases. Spain is in the Schengen Area, so short-stay visitors follow the Schengen 90-days-in-180-days framework, with visa-free or visa-required treatment depending on nationality. International access is broad through Aena-linked gateways such as Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca and Malaga-Costa del Sol, while mainland travel is shaped by Renfe/AVE high-speed rail between major cities; islands are normally combined by air and ferry. For loyalty travelers, Spanish-origin groups matter more than in many European markets: Melia Rewards, NH/Minor/GHA Discovery and Paradores' Amigos de Paradores have strong local relevance. Among global programs, Marriott Bonvoy has meaningful coverage helped by AC Hotels' Spanish base, while Accor ALL is a practical Europe-wide option; Hilton Honors and IHG One Rewards are present but more selective by city or resort area.

Where To Base

Use Madrid and Barcelona for city stays, business travel and rail-linked itineraries. Seville, Granada and Malaga are natural Andalusian bases; Valencia, the Balearics and the Canaries suit coast-and-island hotel stays; the Basque Country and Galicia work well for northern food and culture routes.

Entry & Getting Around

Spain follows the Schengen short-stay framework: many nationalities may visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, while others need a Schengen visa. Major gateways include Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Malaga; on the mainland, AVE high-speed rail links key cities.

Loyalty Landscape

Spain rewards checking local programs first: Melia has a strong domestic resort and urban position, NH/Minor is important in city hotels, and Paradores covers historic and destination-led stays. Among global schemes, Marriott Bonvoy and Accor ALL are usually the first broad programs to compare.

Trip preparation

Health

Spain has high food and water standards; tap water is generally potable in cities and resorts, though hikers should treat untreated water. Summer heat, strong sun, wildfire smoke, beach currents and mountain weather are practical risks. Use insect precautions outdoors: CDC notes bug bites can spread disease in Spain, including sand-fly leishmaniasis risk. Higher routes in the Pyrenees/Sierra Nevada require sun, cold and altitude planning.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, flu, polio, varicella, Tdap and shingles as applicable, and COVID-19. Hepatitis A is considered for most travelers, especially rural areas or street food; hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers under 60 and may be considered for older travelers. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is only for selected higher-risk activities or access concerns. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and not required for entry to Spain.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely usable in Spain if your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. Major local networks include Movistar, Orange/MasOrange, Vodafone Spain and Yoigo; Movistar states eSIM is available for mobile lines and compatible with prepaid when requested in store. Orange Travel sells Spain eSIM plans online/app and lists partner coverage on Orange, Movistar/Telefónica, Vodafone and Yoigo. Airport, city-store physical SIMs and travel eSIM marketplaces are also common.
