Rodríguez Ballón International Airport (AQP) is Arequipa’s main airport and a practical regional gateway for southern Peru, including Colca Canyon trips. It is not a major global hub and is not a Star Alliance, SkyTeam or oneworld hub; JetSMART Perú treats Arequipa as a secondary base, while LATAM Perú and SKY also operate important domestic services. Despite the “international” name, the traveler experience is mostly domestic and regional, with Lima and Cusco the key connection points and any direct international flying worth rechecking close to travel. The airport is compact: one passenger terminal, short walking distances, and no inter-terminal transfer problem. For the city, an authorized taxi or app-based car is usually the simplest choice, with the Plaza de Armas/city centre typically around 15–30 minutes away depending on traffic.
