Kan Kiin

An unremarkable Daly City strip mall might not be the most obvious spot to find well-crafted Thai cuisine, but putting appearances aside, this cheery little spot delivers on flavor. During the daytime, you’ll find an assortment of fusion brunch items (for example, a take on chicken and waffles that features hat yai, fragrant Southern Thai-style fried chicken) alongside a variety of more typical Thai restaurant fare. The menu includes the usual suspects of stir-fried noodles and curries, as well as less ubiquitous items like spicy clay pot catfish, and across the board special care and bold sea

Note: Temporarily closedSet back in an ordinary strip mall, the vibe and service at this sushi jewel are anything but. Wonderful, warm, and gracious, diners here are in for a treat. The interior is sleek and stylish, with dramatic pressed-tin ceilings and a coveted eight-seat counter. Naturally, reservations are a must, especially for the omakase, complete with items that can hang with the best in San Fran.Fans of nigiri should make a beeline for the chef's selection, but the more discerning palate will revel in market specials, like silky Hokkaido scallops, sweet and succulent live spot prawn

Named after the pleasantly buzzing insect that is a symbol of France's Occitania, there is something sweetly familiar and comforting about this fittingly small-yet-notable Glen Park charmer. Chef Joseph Magidow, a veteran of the San Francisco restaurant scene, runs the open kitchen as a one-man show, and his time spent in Southwest France is thoroughly evident in his cooking. The menu is a simple prix fixe that presents diners with only a handful of choices, but Chef Magidow’s commitment to carefully sourced ingredients and diligent technique (including nose-to-tail, whole animal butchery) set

Tucked into SF’s hilly hinterlands, in a quiet enclave away from the hubbub of the urban center, this Bernal Heights retreat has the potential to be overlooked. But, thanks to the steady hand of Chef/owner Greg Lutes (whose eclectic seasonal cooking earned him many a fan at a series of pop-ups that funded this venture) word was bound to get out. Locals now pack this intimate spot for hand-made pastas, like porcini- and black truffle-ravioli; as well as less conventional indulgences, like uni crème brûlée with caviar. Meaty mains like the Wagyu flat iron steak with maitake-bordelaise also hit t

El Buen Comer

“Good eats” are promised right in the name of this approachable neighborhood restaurant on the outskirts of the Mission, and La Cocina alum Isabel Caudillo delivers in full. Her menu highlights the cooking of her native Mexico City, featuring homestyle dishes like her signature guisados, as in tender, pork ribs slowly simmered in salsa verde, served with nopales and plenty of warm, handmade corn tortillas to mop up every last drop of the delectable sauce. The focused menu is rounded out with other classics: pambazos, chiles rellenos and fresh-fried tortilla chips accompanied by a hefty scoop o

Chinese, Hunanese and Sichuan

Hunanese cuisine may have once taken a back seat to the Bay Area's roster of Chinese spots, so it’s no wonder that this snug gem has attracted many a local and curious palate. Try to snag one of the beautifully carved booths in the back — then you'll be privy to the goings-on in the kitchen. Settle in and begin to peruse the menu of specialties. Boldly flavored dishes incorporate oodles of smoked, cured and fermented ingredients — from the tender, juicy stir-fried cilantro beef, to the pungent pork, black bean and pickled chili mixture that tops a mound of spicy, hand-cut godfather’s noodles.

This Noe Valley sushi spot straddles the line between easygoing neighborhood appeal and high-end indulgence. While the dining room is first come, first-served, offering an approachable à la carte menu featuring the likes of maki, tempura, and sashimi, the front counter by contrast is reservation only, and commands a much loftier price point. The omakase option is where Chef Jiro Lin flexes his creative muscles by complementing the likes of salt-cured tile fish, aged hamachi, and sea perch with a potent dose of wasabi, Japanese chili pepper, and fish liver. The more casual option offers less pe

Hilly Noe Valley is the perfect setting for this jewel of a sushi restaurant, so make your way inside to discover a bustling (read: energetic) vibe. The menu is thoroughly Japanese with a few Californian touches—think grilled shishito peppers tossed with crunchy daikon in a ponzu dressing.Begin with the signature tempura-fried seaweed cracker topped with spicy tuna and avocado. Then, perfectly sized tasting spoons of seared ankimo with scallions, as well as halibut tartare with yuzu make for delightful quick bites. Though rolls are available, regulars opt for the nigiri, which might include ka
