Today, it’s a smart spot where the front room affords a view of the skilled chefs as they work on intricate dishes that have a creative edge – such as a deep, delicious consommé made from unused bread, or expertly cooked langoustine with kohlrabi and kombu. The famous Peruvian dish does feature – with sea bass, tuna and oyster among the varieties – but so do empanadas, grilled steaks and tostones. Next, it’s the striking black-and-white wildlife mural filling one wall. The result is a little more restrained than that sounds, with cleverly conceived dishes that pack in flavour and playfulness in equal measure. Expect to find the likes of offal-stuffed doughnuts with grated horseradish or black pudding dumplings with crayfish XO sauce. The friendly team enhance the experience, as do the knowledgeable wine recommendations and appealing prices.

A farm in Masuria, around 190km north of this appropriately named restaurant, provides produce for the chefs’ wholesome dishes that showcase big, gutsy flavours. Not all of the ingredients are local however, with the speciality in-house butchered steaks coming from Japan, Australia and beyond – the delicious beef dripping chips are the ideal accompaniment. The wine list is concise yet varied, while the bottles are stored on copper racks that suit the simple, rustic aesthetic of the room.
