La Table de la Bergerie
Modern Cuisine · ★ Michelin

This restaurant near Angers, in the heart of the Coteaux-du-Layon vineyards, is well worth your attention. It is the haunt of talented David Guitton, who hails from Loire Atlantique and who has trained under top chefs all over the world from the United States and Britain to Monaco. There is no à la carte menu here, but a voluntarily concise offering that reverently respects the seasons. David sources his ingredients from small, local producers, rustling up dishes that err towards minimalist so that the flavour can take centre stage. Regional wines, including the estate’s organic production, ta

Le Petit Serrant, an 18C manor house located at the confluence of the River Maine and River Loire, is the elegant setting for this restaurant, where diners come as much for the cuisine as for the charm of the location. Romain Zarazaga, a chef trained by Laurent Petit, Emmanuel Renaut and the Troisgros, serves a wonderful array of dishes that are perfectly in tune with the times. His masterful jus and sauces are another standout feature of his cooking – for example, line-caught sea bass confit accompanied by a butter-based fish stock with Domaine Mosse vermouth. The charcoal-grilled squab with

We fell head over heels with this bistro! The chef’s slate menu unveils a fresh, indulgent take on nostalgic dishes that will make you drool: pâté en croûte; calf's head with gribiche sauce; saddle of rabbit, mashed potato, mustard sauce; game in season, without forgetting a vegetarian offering. Fine choice of sensibly priced tipples from Anjou and elsewhere, most of which are organic and natural and an impressive lineup of chartreuse liqueurs. Bookings recommended.

Le Chenin
Traditional Cuisine

On a pretty cobbled square opposite Savennières Church, this restaurant welcomes you with an eye-catching red frontage and a pretty terrace. In the kitchen, Arthur Favé and Maïté Verriez craft big-boned cuisine that showcases local produce, often sourced from their own large vegetable garden or cherry-picked organic producers. The stage is set for seasonal, generous, deftly crafted fare, served against a quaint backdrop of vintage and modern bistro details. The sommelier talks you through an excellent selection of over 400 mainly organic and natural wines.

This barn, built out of light wood with a polished concrete floor and a small lounge area, is the brainchild of a famous local organic seed producer. The poplar wood walls are lined with cases of bottles in tribute to the owner’s former profession of wine merchant, which also explains the splendid selection of organic and natural vintages. This nectar is perfectly suited to the chef’s simple, heart-warming, bistro nosh: a concise lunchtime menu; tapas to share in the evenings.

Chez Rémi
Traditional Cuisine

Sporting his checked shirt and blue apron, Rémi officiates behind what was likely the counter of this former betting shop, which has been turned into a cosy little bistro. On the menu for lunch today: a tasty chicken liver terrine; redfish bream with its delicious fumet; poached peach, financier and creamy house-made vanilla ice cream. One of the major draws is the restaurant's friendly atmosphere. Photos of the chef and his past co-workers adorn the walls, and a blackboard features the day's set menus. Customers collect their wine from the wine cellar, whether to accompany their meal here or

Japanese-born Kazumi Hatakenaka originally came to France to work in a traditional inn in the Beaujolais region. Behind his counter, he now crafts a tasting menu devoted entirely to pedigree Japanese cuisine that is the epitome of delicate and fresh. Drool-worthy dishes and flawless cooking and seasonings. Expect to spend three hours to do full justice to this culinary experience.
