A fairy-tale setting for a property of almost castle-like aspect, originally built as a customs post on the River Po in the fourteenth century. Today Massimo Spigaroli, whose family were once sharecroppers on the surrounding land, is its owner and has transformed the complex into a complete destination: guest rooms, the Hosteria del Maiale bistrot and spaces for private events. Contemporary spaces spread across two floors, plus a veranda terrace, make this solid restaurant a great choice for lovers of Japanese specialties – both cooked and raw preparations of meat and fish – executed with a light touch and clean, distinct flavors. At lunch (weekdays only), the kitchen also offers rice bowls and noodle dishes accompanied by various sides. Wine enthusiasts will appreciate the dedicated Champagne section on the wine list.

A pleasant (and excellent) provincial restaurant with a modern feel and a traditional brick-vaulted ceiling, where owner-chef Samuele Miglioli pays tribute to local traditions in his cuisine (don’t miss the marubini pasta in three broths and the famous pumpkin tortelli). The dishes here focus on seasonal ingredients which are carefully transformed into generous dishes full of flavour, as demonstrated by the rice timbale served on a delicious beef ragù and topped with beef carpaccio. There’s also an excellent selection of wines, with a particular focus on sparkling wines.

Situated near the banks of the River Po, this century - old, family - run restaurant serves regional specialities, such as the famous culatello ham. You will find reasonably priced local dishes at the ‘Tipico di Casa Spigaroli’ at lunchtime during the week, and themed menus at the weekend.

Enjoy excellent reinterpretations of Emilian classics in this large 18C farmhouse. It is lit with modern designer - style chandeliers and warmed by a large fireplace. The three splendid guestrooms combine elegance with typical regional decor.

Situated in Cicognolo in the Lower Po valley, where early morning mists create an evocative atmosphere in autumn, this traditional restaurant with a rustic feel serves specialities from Lombardy with a focus on delicious starters and top-quality meat. Our inspector particularly recommends the white onion gratin soup and the Burgundy-style snails. A simpler menu is available at lunchtime and there’s a small garden for alfresco dining on summer evenings.

An authentic trattoria which is a joy to visit, where time seems to have stood still for decades. Situated on the border between two provinces, the restaurant focuses on specialities from Parma, many of which are made from home - grown produce. Homemade pickles and chutneys are also sold here.
