Rico Birndt has come up with a modern concept that makes vegetables the heart of the meal. There are two surprise menus – one comprising eight courses and the other 12 courses. Canned, cured and pickled ingredients also have their role to play. The airy, modern interior and the relaxed atmosphere are certainly inviting, the large window front provides a view of the outside. There are a few seats at the small bar – here, jars of preserves are part of the decoration, in keeping with the philosophy of the house. The chefs join in with serving the food and are happy to present and explain the dish

In the former cookery school and bistro of his mentor Thomas Mühlberger, young Dominik Wachter has introduced a modern "counter concept". In the cool, chic and urban atmosphere, you sit comfortably at the large bar in the middle of the space or at one of the high tables, from which you can watch the action at the kitchen pass unfold. The set menu (choose between four- to six-course formats) uses mainly regional ingredients, and the owner also forages for mushrooms, wild herbs, nuts etc from the local forests. Time after time, Dominik Wachter successfully presents beautifully balanced contrasts

From the get-go, the stage is set in grand style: Following a spectacular overture in the form of various aperitifs, an artisanal bread selection and amuse-bouches, Edip Sigl reveals why it is worth making the trip to dine at this restaurant in Das Achental hotel. He presents two incredible set menus: "Chiemgau pur" (devoted to the region) and "Chiemgau goes around the world" (a combination of local and international ingredients). Both feature modern creations that are complex but not overdone, highly refined and consistently elegant – think langoustine, artichoke, kumquat, pea, bisque, or the

In one of the oldest inns in the region, tradition is celebrated, but not at the expense of progress. There are a number of charming dining areas in which to enjoy dishes such as Rindertafelspitz aus dem Kupferpfandl (boiled beef fillet from the copper pot), apple horseradish, chive sauce, creamed spinach and sautéed potatoes and, for dessert, Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) with plum compote and whipped cream. Order à la carte or opt for the "Signature Menu" for two or more diners.

As the name suggests, the emphasis here is on fish dishes. The menu features, for example, house-made fish soup with rouille sauce and baguette, or perch fillet in a garlic and herb butter with parsley potatoes, but there are also meat and vegetarian options. The grappa and brandy selection is really impressive and might tempt you to stay for a nightcap. In fine weather, the best spot is the terrace overlooking the lake. Tip: Right next door, you can purchase fish specialities to take home. A stroll along the lakeside, which has a jetty for small boats, is also recommended. Good overnight acco

Diners are assured of warm hospitality courtesy of Stefanie and Franz Tanner at this establishment that has been run by the family since 1995. Their dedication is palpable in the chic, modern Alpine-style guestrooms, the tasteful restaurant with its lounge atmosphere and, finally, the excellent food. Dishes such as "venison ragout, Martl's hunt, mushroom rösti, cranberries, celery purée, pretzel dumplings" are seasonal and made with select ingredients that are sourced almost exclusively from the region and preferably organic. The lunch set menu is enticing. The kitchens are open for hot meals

The restaurant of the exclusive Chiemgau Lakeside Retreat, an offshoot of the nearby Resort Das Achental in Grassau, draws you in with its enticing lakeside location – right by Chiemsee. In fine weather, the lake view is best from the terrace, but, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows, you won't be deprived even if you dine inside. The decor in the dining rooms, which can be separated off by means of a glass partition, is an attractive blend of traditional regional elements such as warm wood and a stylish classic tiled stove and modern sleek lines. This combination is also reflected in the c
