This quintessential Chiemgau country inn, which is over 600 years old, blends tradition and modernity to delightful effect. Warm, aged wood and premium contemporary design elements are juxtaposed to make for a tasteful and comfortable setting. Headed up by Hannes Fussel, who has worked in some of Austria's finest kitchens, the team serves up dishes packed with flavour and personality that are very much inspired by the Chiemsee region. The set menu (aptly named "A Stroll through Chiemgau") features, for example, tenderly glazed sturgeon on a ragout of artichokes, accompanied by sauerkraut beurr

This long-established inn by the church is always busy and much loved by its many regulars. Appearing in records as a tavern as early as the 16C, it has now been run by the same family for five generations. The cosy interior features an old tiled stove providing warmth in winter. In summer, a secluded beer garden, a veranda and even a rooftop terrace beckon. The Bavarian and Styrian cuisine includes appetising options such as venison goulash with butter spaetzle, red cabbage and aronia berries. Seasonal ingredients from the immediate area are used whenever possible. It is a real plus that on e

Iconic chef Heinz Winkler really put his Residenz hotel on the culinary map. After opening this place in 1991, he remained at the helm, steadily building it up to become a benchmark for classical fine dining at the highest level. Now his son Alexander is upholding the tradition of the establishment in his role as maître d'. Led by Daniel Pape, the thoroughly dedicated kitchen team sticks to the tried-and-tested formula: classic cuisine with modern touches made with excellent ingredients. In summer, an aperitif on the terrace overlooking the mountains makes for the perfect prelude to the five-t

Who would expect to find a restaurant like this in the small town of Frasdorf? This place may be a little out of the way, but the talent and ambition of the young chef definitely make a visit worthwhile. Comprising five, six or eight courses, the set menu presents carefully considered dishes with their own unique flair, incorporating influences from all over the world, from France to Asia to New Zealand. The quality of the ingredients is beyond question. The seasonal Bavarian venison served with a pepper curry, for example, is delicious, not to mention the exquisite desserts. Fantastic wine li

It's no surprise that this restaurant, run with dedication for over 30 years, is so popular! Diners are won over by both the cosy space that is beautifully done out to exude rustic charm and chef Astrid Hilse's fresh cuisine, which takes the form of a menu that changes on a daily basis. Top-notch produce goes into seasonal dishes with a definite wow factor, such as braised lemon chicken with roasted vegetables and garlic potatoes, or local lamb prepared two ways and served with olive confit and green beans. The service is friendly – and the chef, too, gets in on the act. Attractive tree-shaded

In the former cookery school and bistro of his mentor Thomas Mühlberger, young Dominik Wachter has introduced a modern "counter concept". In the cool, chic and urban atmosphere, you sit comfortably at the large bar in the middle of the space or at one of the high tables, from which you can watch the action at the kitchen pass unfold. The set menu (choose between four- to six-course formats) uses mainly regional ingredients, and the owner also forages for mushrooms, wild herbs, nuts etc from the local forests. Time after time, Dominik Wachter successfully presents beautifully balanced contrasts

From the get-go, the stage is set in grand style: Following a spectacular overture in the form of various aperitifs, an artisanal bread selection and amuse-bouches, Edip Sigl reveals why it is worth making the trip to dine at this restaurant in Das Achental hotel. He presents two incredible set menus: "Chiemgau pur" (devoted to the region) and "Chiemgau goes around the world" (a combination of local and international ingredients). Both feature modern creations that are complex but not overdone, highly refined and consistently elegant – think langoustine, artichoke, kumquat, pea, bisque, or the

This exclusive mountain-top location, surrounded by woods and meadows, really is the stuff of dreams. What was once a hiking lodge is now a cosy restaurant serving modern Alpine cuisine that can only be reached on foot (50 minutes from the Lederstube car park) or by booking a shuttle bus. Diners seated at the front can see the chefs at work in the open kitchen, grilling top-quality produce over an open fire. A shining example is the super-fresh Chiemsee pike-perch with bold roasted aromas, accompanied by an intensely flavoursome Jerusalem artichoke puree and crunchy rapini – a delightfully acc
