This serene elder from Chef/owner James Syhabout is packed every night. Tucked into colorful Piedmont Avenue, the space is long and neat, while soft music and a vibrant staff set the mood. It's cool and relaxed but never casual.Chef Syhabout pairs local ingredients with precise technique; he also pulls from his Thai and Chinese heritage to deliver an elegant menu full of familiar flavors that taste as wonderful as they look. Dinner might unveil slices of raw Japanese sea bream dressed with aged soy sauce, fermented plum, and mustard. That signature slow-poached egg yolk sitting in a bed of oni

A slightly clandestine air still prevails outside this inconspicuous little spot, but the secret is out: the handful of seats inside are hotly in demand. Chefs Alan Hsu and Sarah Cooper have both worked in some of the country's most celebrated kitchens, but here channel their talents on a more intimate scale. Their shared vision emerges in a mercurial seasonal tasting menu that dutifully celebrates the wealth of Californian ingredients, spanning squab to rockfish and wild mushrooms to citrus. The style is pared down and technically precise, letting products shine while adding a spark of person

Horn Barbecue

Arrive early to this local sensation from Matt Horn as there is bound to be a wait. It's well worth your time though, as the chef's "West Coast Barbecue" complete with inspiration is nothing less than rich, delicious, and decadent. Set along a commercial stretch and within an industrial structure, this cool, warehouse-style space features such decorative accents as a mural of an angry steer, kitchen-facing counter (with a menu right above it), and sleek wood banquettes.Employing his family's cooking traditions and all manner of meat-smoking, the chef turns out trays of brisket, pulled pork, an

Spinning Bones

On the quaint island of Alameda comes this causal concept from restaurateurs, Mike Yakura and Danny Sterling. The entrance is in keeping with its industrial interior design, complete with a counter and kitchen in full view, exposed ductwork, and an indigo-blue ceiling.Billing itself as a Californian rotisserie, the menu is also strewn with Hawaiian and Japanese accents—behold such unorthodox sides as a Napa slaw, with pickled red kraut, carrot, and creamy sesame dressing. Top-notch meats take center stage, with starters (corn fritters with strawberry jam, anyone?) to boot. Marinated in koji an

MAMA Oakland

Italian, Contemporary · Bib

Opened by a husband-and-wife team, this alluring spot has its simple yet chic look down pat, with dark green ceilings, brass-and-glass chandeliers and live plants scattered throughout. The premise is straightforward, offering a reasonably priced, three-course dinner with no reservations. Choose one of two options for each course, like a soup or salad tailed by pasta and dessert. Items change often, but one constant is house-made pasta dressed with a hearty tomato sugo featuring braised pork and beef, which also served as the inspiration behind this establishment. The wine list is full of inter

Soba Ichi

Japanese · Bib

Located deep in industrial West Oakland, this remarkable little soba spot presents certain challenges, with no reservations accepted, waits that run upwards of 45 minutes at peak hours and the allotted 100 daily portions of noodles have been known to sell out. Happily, any delay can be passed with a drink in the cheery garden, and the soba is well worth the wait.Handmade ni-hachi style soba noodles are made with a blend of 80% buckwheat and 20% wheat, served hot or cold in dishes like tenseiro, chewy cold soba with feather-light tempura shrimp and vegetables alongside a flavorful dipping sauce

Bombera

Fire provides the central motif for this boisterous community staple, from the venue itself (a former fire station) to the name (Spanish for fire woman), all the way to a crackling wood-fired oven that not only animates the kitchen, but also provides ash used to nixtamalize corn for house-made masa. All of this seems perfectly fitting for Chef Dominica Rice-Cisneros, whose passion has helped to shape Oakland's current Mexican restaurant scene, combining a locavore pedigree and fine dining chops with a respect for the generational knowledge of heritage cooking. Teni East Kitchen

Burmese · Bib

Burmese food with a California spin is on the menu at Chef/owner Tiyo Shibabaw’s cheery spot in Temescal, where the tea leaf salads come with kale and there’s plenty of flaky, golden roti bread to go around. Everything is affordable here, but the lunchtime specials are an especially good deal: a hot and flavorful entrée (like spicy coconut curry chicken with rice noodles) and a fresh salad—go for the pea shoots topped with radishes and fried garlic in a turmeric dressing. Bright and airy, with exposed wooden beams on the ceiling, Teni draws a crowd of hipsters of all ages. Its dining room can
